Thanks to everyone who has let me know of problems
with Birding-Aus over new year - I won't reply
individually, as I can't answer all your questions.
Pleased to see some of you are still getting
birding-aus mail - I still think there are some
problems down there at Deakin. I know most of their
machines were off line over New Year to avoid Y2K
problems. Also, the mail server is still rejecting
mail from some domains. No idea why. I think they
have IT staff back at work now so we may see things
back to normal again soon.
Speaking of Y2K, looks like Carol Proberts up in the
Blue Mts west of Sydney may claim the first bird
record for 2000. Like Carol, I saw a bird fleeing
noisy fireworks at Collaroy Plateau (Sydney northern
beaches) at about 12:04 am. My best guess is
Australian Magpie but I had barely a glimpse of not
much more than a shadow as it flushed from a stand of
trees. Fitting that my first Y2K bird should be
something I couldn't ID for sure....
Can anyone beat Carol's sighting? I guess a definite
sight record on the stroke of midnight might just get
in ahead of a "probable tawny frogmouth"? Surely
someone around the harbour would have had a Silver
Gull lined up ready to tick! I guess Tony Palliser &
friends who were somewhere near Chatham Island (NZ)
will probably have the first bird for the 2000s.
