Hi All
Thinking about highlights I couldn't really add birds like Gouldian
Finch, Hooded Parrot, Banded Fruit-dove, White-throated Grasswren and
Chestnut Rail because I've seen them so many times. However seeing
people see them is a joy (except for those few who just tick them off
with a grunt and no other show of interest).
But much of the year has been peaks and troughs. Discovering a very
obliging little Mangrove Fantail down at East Arm was a thrill, soon
tempered by the roar of the bulldozers advancing on that little patch of
mangroves to wipe it out of existence. Winning conservation status for
the Chestnut Rail mangroves at Stuart Park, was also tempered by the
added uncertainty of whether it would remain with the planning changes.
I discovered more little sites for Zitting Cisticola and then learnt the
sedgelands at Vesteys Lake were under threat of being bulldozed as a
mosquito breeding hazard. Exploring new country at Kudjekbinj, while I
had little time to bird, held the promise of discoveries to be explored
further next year.
To all those wonderful people who sent greetings to the grandchildren,
thank you.
The Ngalanbali and Djalama clans send their best regards for Christmas
and the New Year.
