The birds of the Big Desert Wilderness and most of the Murray-Sunset NP
(north-west Victorian Mallee) are broadly similar, though there is more
semi-arid grassland and chenopod shrubland in MSNP. The birds are
patchy as well, as suitable habitats for the rarities (Red-lored
Whistler etc.) are not the majority habitat types. Be alert for all
possibilities, and try to cover as many different habitats as your time
or patience allows!

Almost nil in the Big Desert I should think, as there's almost no
suitable habitat - maybe none at all. A quick perusal of the Vic Atlas
reveals .... no records of PWs in either the Big Desert or Murray-Sunset
areas (up until 1985). The 'mallee' birds you could hope for include
such lovely things as Striated Grasswren, Red-lored Whistler,
Yellow-plumed Honeyeater, Purple-gaped Honeyeater, White-fronted
Honeyeater, Southern Scrub-robin, Malleefowl, Shy Heathwren, Chestnut
Quail-thrush, etc. .......

Have fun - it's a great part of the world. I'm spending the days around
NYE in the north end of the Sunset Country. I hope for both our sakes
it isn't TOO hot.
