Mark,
On this subject, I was speechless recently when I was having a phone
conversation with a friend on the land, and mentioned a newspaper article
on the subject of current clearing rates in Qld. She rapidly went into
defence mode, and replied, "What are we expected to do, we're all broke, we
need the land, and besides, we're only clearing regrowth."
I claim no expertise on this subject, but, like many of us, I am upset
about the rate of tree clearing in our state of Queensland. The unspoken
question on the tip of my tongue was, "Regrowth of what, exactly?"
Apparently regrowth has no status or value. Or future.
But it seems as though if they keep up all this clearing, they will all
stay broke, because the land will eventually fail them.
My heart goes out to the farmers, who are in siege mentality. We sit at our
cosy computers and criticise them from our positions of financial security.
I don't think that is really helpful. There must be a better way.
Regards,
Jill
