Several months ago I mentioned the Jandowae area (about 300km west of
Brisbane) and the Painted Honeyeaters I saw when I lived there. At the time
I had a number of enquiries and attempted to explain in detail how to find
the areas. I have since purchased a scanner and now have on file a map with
areas marked. I have also found further records that show that I have seen
PHE in the areas marked from February to December (every month during this
period). I would imagine that January would also be a possibility but I
"dipped out". Any one who requires this information should contact me
direct and I can e-mail the map.
Last Saturday, I was at a picnic area at Somerset Dam north of Brisbane. In
a tree very close to the toilet block was the nest of a Figbird with
fledglings looking close to leaving the nest. No surprise here but I then
noticed another nest within ten metres. This one contained Pied Butcherbird
chicks at about the same level of maturity. My knowledge gap forces me to
ask the following questions:-
Wouldn't a Butcherbird normally consider a Figbird chick a tasty morsel?
Is it common for predator and possible prey to breed in such close
proximity?
There are many other questions to consider but these two will do for now.
