Yesterday, with another BOCA member and Bernice Dowling of Parks
Victoria, I saw the sweetest bubba of the year (excepting of
course Karen's new Isobel-Kara on the family web site). A tiny
Hooded Plover, looking a bit like a baby grebe, crouching in the
sparse grass which passes for cover on the beaches of the
Mornington Peninsula (south of Melbourne).
Through the efforts of Penboc, the Friends of the Hooded Plover
and Parks Vic., especially Bernice, there are many more nesting
pairs than a few years ago. The public have learnt to control
their dogs and walk quickly past nest sites. But sadly this baby
seemed already to have lost its siblings.
We need to educate the foxes too: I hope they'll soon accept
they shouldn't be there and pass on with good grace.
