Subject: | birding-aus Black-eared Cuckoo in Gembrook, Victoria? |

Today, at Gembrook, Victoria, I saw a bird I couldn't I.D. even with the field guides. I think it was a Black-eared Cuckoo, the size seemed right and it presented as a cuckoo, and it said peee (descending) and pee-o-wit, like the book says it should, it had almost no tail to speak of just four little white feathers in a fan shaped configuration, HOWEVER: It had a chestnut brown cap and dark scalloping on its breast. It was in a wet sclerophyll dense forest and it was being attended, or at least harried by a Grey Shrike Thrush (of about the same size). Finally it did not really have a defined white eye brow. Maybe it was a very young GST? Maybe the chestnut head makes it one of the bigger cuckoos. I don't know. Can anyone offer helpful suggestions?
