G'day all
For the record these are my rules:
- Only live birds can be added to my life list.
- Dead birds can be added to my database of records (obviously not museum
specimens and the like). In this way I have records of Barn Owls for the
Hamilton area but have never seen a live one here. On my WA trip recently
I only recorded White-cheeked Honeyeaters near Kalbarri. In Perth while
cleaning the car I found a dead W-c H stuck to the front. This bird could
have come from anywhere to the north of Perth. An example of the risks in
associating roadkills with distributions.
- No weeds can be counted. My Australian life list of 516 doesn't include
Mute Swan, House Sparrow, Feral Pigeon etc. Similarly my world life list
doesn't include the introduced House Crows or the Mynahs that I saw in
Singapore.
- I have only included one heard only species on my life list. This was
the Bush Thick-knee. I must have heard these calling at dusk in dozens of
locations across northern Australia in 1993 but never managed to see one.
So it's on my list but I'm not really comfortable with it. Recently at Two
People Bay I was within a few metres of a Noisy Scrub-bird calling its head
off. He didn't show himself so I won't count it. So I guess I'm
inconsistent! The Thick-knee stays however.
- Only birds I identify myself or get a good look at and feel confident
about go on my list. I've been on several pelagic trips where I've not
counted a species or two that I didn't quite get on to.
If birding was easy everyone would do it...
Cheers
Steve
