Two Sydney birdwatching clubs (NSW FOC and CBOC) conducted a campout at
Copeland near Gloucester (north of Newcastle NSW) over the long weekend
2-4/10/99. Rain was a nuisance but didn't cause too much disruption. We
recorded over 100 species including Southern Logrunners, Satin & Regent
Bowerbirds, Wompoo, Topknot and White-headed Pigeons, Brush Turkey, Rose
Robin and Russet-tailed Thrush. Boobook, frogmouths and owlet-nightjars were
heard at the campsite at Copeland Common. Noisy Pittas were frequently heard
but few were seen. Scarlet Honeyeaters were feeding in the trees at the
campsite. Many summer migrants have returned - Spectacled and Black-eared
Monarchs, Leaden Flycatchers, Pallid and Channel-billed Cuckoos, and Rufous
Fantails. However the highlight was a Masked Owl seen while spotlighting in
Copeland Tops Forest Reserve on 2/10/99 - a new bird for most of the
members.
