Hi everyone,
Maureen Cooper has asked me to forward the following message, as she is not
a friend of computers, and Les Thyer is away and therefore unavailable to
help her out.

Subject : MANGROVE ENVIRONMENT AT RISK IN MACKAY
Hello everyone,
Apologies for not keeping you all informed of the latest developments ? Les
Thyer is away and I have been ill with the flu . - so this is an update on
the progress (or lack thereof) in our fight to prevent the Mains Roads
Department destroying 12.3 ha. Of mangroves in Barnes Creek for a
temporary connector road.
On the 5th September, 1999, the Department of Primary Industries (Qld)
issued a permit to the Qld. Dept. of Main Roads (Permit No. 99NOMAO561)
authorising that department to "undertake the removal of mangroves and
other marine plants from an area of approx.12.3 ha. of tidal land situated
to the North of Barnes Creek, Bassett Basin " for the construction of the
E,W. Connector Road/Levee system. Clause 13 of this permit allows freehold
property owners to clear marine plants on their properties to the edge of
the road reserve provided the trees are cleared by hand and only to ground
level under Main Roads supervision.. This will mean the loss of a greater
area of mangroves than previously stated.
Despite promises by Qld. Dept. of Environment, Mackay City Council and Main
Roads Dept. the groups opposed to this road were not informed of the issue
of this permit until just recently and an appeal had to be lodged before
2nd. October, 1999. This had not given anyone much time but an apppeal to
the Fisheries Industries Tribunal has been lodged by Mackay Conservation
Group, North Mackay Business Group and Bird Observers Club of Australia
(Mackay). The Environmental Defenders Office of Northern Queensland is
acting on our behalf. I am appealing to you all once again to keep the
pressure on these Government Departments by emailing the following:
The Hon. R. Welford, Minister for Environment,
Environment&
The Hon. S. Bredhauer, Minister for Transport and Main Roads,
Many Thanks - Maureen Cooper.
