I am keen to ascertain whether Kelp Gulls (KGs) are "...expanding rapidly
[in NZ]..." (Vic. Bird Atlas 1987) and "...numbers have rapidly increased
and range has expanded...[in Aust.]" (HANZAB 3, 1996] in Victoria (Aust.)
There appears to be some conflict between data presented by the Handbook of
Aust. NZ and Antarctic Birds (Vol. 3) and the information available for the
species in Victoria. I welcome observers to forward me their observations
of this species which have not already been forawarded to the Atlas of
Victorian Wildlife. Any opinions about whether you think the species is
expanding or otherwise in Victoria are also welcome.
I liked the note about
- tame Kelp Gulls ate snails in domestic gardens
- a particular bird accompanied some children's morning piano practice and
that,
- KGs are regularly eaten by Maoris (HANZAB 3, p. 495).
If anyone is interested I will post my findings to the list at a later
date.
