Hello again
Last night I was talking to a semi trailer driver who did
the trip from Cairns to Normanton Tuesday week ago when the moon was full &
bright in that area. He reported 30 to 40 small owls (Southern Boobooks) on
the road between the 40 Mile Scub & Mt Surprise. He killed several as they
were in the middle of the road & wouldn't fly. He assured me that the
numbers of these owls are so great on the Gulf Developmental Road that a few
killed will make no difference. I suppose the same goes for the area around
Lakeland Downs on the road to Cooktown! This for me now completes the
picture as he tried to drive around the owls and still managed to kill a
few. The road to Normanton is mostly single lane bitumen and large trucks
can't swerve onto the gravel shoulders. The road is gradually being
upgraded to two lanes of bitumen & I would surmise that less owls will then
be killed.

Cheers Stan
