Hello fellow birders,
An up-date on the Red-rumped Swallows near Newell Beach in case anyone
is coming up: I saw a single on the power lines with about 250 Tree
Martins at 1800-1820 on Feb. 26. It ( or they) seem to be here early
morning and late afternoon only. Give me a call or e-mail if you want
details.
Other nice sightings were:
2 Golden-backed Honeyeaters at Abattoir Swamp, surprisingly far east I
thought. Lloyd Neilsen saw some here about a month ago too.
Bustards at Mary River, despite the very long grass.
A Red-necked Crake with a juvenile at Kingfisher Park, and an adult
with 2 juveniles here at Cassowary House, Kuranda.
Lovely Buff-breasted Paradise-Kingfishers at Kingfisher Park, including
immaculate full tailed presumed males and a number of juveniles.
The big female and 3 well grown cassowary chicks at Cassowary House. We
were greatly relieved that they survived cyclone Rona, though the male
has now left the group and comes in on his own. He clearly hasn't read
the textbooks as he is supposed to be the main parent! Before the
cyclone both the male and female were coming daily with the 3 chicks or
combinations thereof, and had been doing so for months.
