birding-aus
To throw a spanner in the works, I've managed to attract a
Lesser Sooty Owl in the Mount Windsor Tablelands in the Wet
Tropics of Queensland using a Sooty Owl tape recording.
This could indicate that either the calls of these two taxa
aren't that different or that (as I've been told in
Victoria) that Tyto owls will be attracted by vocalisations
of different Tyto species (and falling-bomb whistles
produced by humans). This certainly makes it hard to
characterise the various Sooty Owl taxa's calls! Good luck
to those who are trying!
George.
