Stan Emmerson's report yesterday of the large number of road kills of
Boobook Owl and Tawny Frogmouth on the highway(!) south of Mount Garnett
and on to Mt Surprise was quite horrific to read.
I related the story to a friend who said that when she and her husband were
travelling on the Gulf Development Road west of Chillagoe late last year
they came across numbers of both species on the road at night and had to
drive around the birds who seemed blinded by their headlights.
On one occasion, they even had to stop and lift a Boobook out of harm's way
- the Boobook being quite dazed and allowed itself to be handled.
Are there more of these species in these areas than we have suspected
previously? It seems that such slaughter that Stan reported would soon
decimate species numbers in a very short time - unless there are more birds
out there than anywhere else further south.
