This year a pair of Mynas tried to nest in the cavity in the roll-a-door on
our garage in Sydney (we don't shut it very often).

I must admit I got a vicarious pleasure from waiting until they had built
the nest and then pulling down the door. Bits of nesting material flying
everywhere and a cross-looking and slightly dizzy Myna. Round 1 to native
birds.

They subsequently nested out of reach in the roof. Round 2 to the Mynas.

However, I think a couple of rats, attracted by our compost bin, found the
nest as they were seen scurrying up a potato vine which grows up the
drain-pipe to the box in which the Mynas nested. Round 3 to the Rats.

We have since poisoned the rats as they started coming into the house and
raiding anything edible in the kitchen. They ate two packets of rat poison
and spurned two rat traps bought for the purpose. Round 4 to Woolworths in
Balmain.

The Mynas are still around. Ecology is very complicated.

Regards, Ian
