The Myna is not mentioned under any current Queensland
legislation and I believe it can therefore be culled without any
permit being needed. However that would probably have to be done
surreptitiously to avoid the emotion response that would result
from some quarters. Maybe find the nest sites and destroy any
eggs? Isn't there a programme in Canberra to do that?
Of course the Myna problem is something that the QLD NPWS should
be tackling. Unfortunately that seems unlikely to happen. In a
draft list of exotic birds known to be in Australia - both wild
and in aviculture - three categories were set up by the NPWS, of
high, medium and low pest potential. In their collective wisdom,
the QLD. NPWS placed the Common Myna in the low pest potential
category! With bureaucrats such as that running the NPWS what
chance does our wildlife stand.
It is also quite legal to keep them as pets (they are excellent
mimics) in Queensland.
