Re recent discussion about the absence of Black-shouldered Kites, we in SA have frequently commented on an apparent absence of these birds on SOME DAYS in areas where they are normally quite abundant. A similar phenomenon has been observed with Kestrels. Sometimes we go a whole day's driving without seeing one. Other days they seem to be everywhere. As yet no-one has made any feasible suggestion as to why these on days/off days might occur, but I'd be interested in hearing any thoughts on the mystery. Tony Russell.
