RESEARCH ASSISTANT WANTED

Vertebrate fauna association with woody debris on floodplains
A project looking at the ecological significance (especially on
biodiversity) of fallen timber (coarse woody debris - CWD) on lowland
floodplains is being conducted by Ralph Mac Nally and colleagues at Monash
University and DNRE.

Sites of different densities of CWD have been set up in Gunbower Island,
Barmah Forest and the Ovens Floodplain (Victoria) and we are surveying them
for all tetrapod vertebrates. Data have been collected for six months and
another year's data need to be accumulated.

We are looking for an RA with good to very good birding skills, especially
in Red Gum forests, to collect information on utilisation of CWD by birds.
The person would also assist in pitfalling and other surveys of reptiles,
small-mammals and amphibians. Field-trips last about 10 days and involve
on-site camping.

The position would be for approximately 9-10 months beginning in January
1999, at level 137.03 (ca $30K p.a.). For further information contact:
