Last Saturday, I was working just north of Hanging Rock, and also observed hordes of Caper White butterflies. Last year, during September, I saw this species breeding on native Caper trees (Capparis spp.) north of Birdsville, South Australia. My understanding is that this species migrates, or is blown, into Victoria and other parts south of its breeding range by strong north winds. I imagine that all those butterflies seen in southern Victoria are doomed not to breed, since their host species only occur further north? To maintain a birdy theme, I did see Inland Dotterel breeding in the same area north of Birdsville. Cheers Ian |
