Hello everybody
with a warm winter and many over-wintering species it is
hard to be accurate about the spring arrivals. Sunday for instance a
solitary Metallic Starling was seen at Daintree and with so many at Cairns
all year it is difficult to know if this was a recent arrival. The first
migrant that I see is usually the Brown-backed Honeyeater. One was here this
morning at a nesting site, they seem to arrive with paperbark in their
bills. The second is usually the Brush Cuckoo that parasitises the B-b C's
nest however some of these over-wintered.
There was a dramatic change to the weather here 3 days ago (warm and
fine with cool nights) and some birds like Sunbirds and Large-billed
Gerygones are building nests. A consequence of the L-b G's activities is
that where ever I go in the valley, Gould's Bronze Cuckoos are calling.
