I am researching the relationship of birds to planted vegetation (primarily windbreaks on farms in Central and Southern Tablelands NSW). I have data on the use of one introduced species Tree Lucerne or Tagasaste (Chamaecytisus prolifer) which indicates a very high usage by native birds, particularly honeyeaters in Spring.. However I am cautious about recommending a non-native plant to farmers for several reasons, not the least being that I am concerned that the seeds might be attractive to introduced birds, particularly House Sparrow and European Goldfinch. I have seen large flocks of sparrows in Tree Lucerne at seeding time, but have not been able to definitely confirm the act of feeding was consummated (so to speak!). Does anyone have anything to offer in respect of any species (not just sparrows) feeding on these seeds? Thanks very much Cilla Kinross |
