Long-billed Corellas are becoming increasingly numerous in parts of
Melbourne, and they breed in Templestowe about 15 km ENE of the city, where
flocks of up to 100 may be seen at any time of the year. A pair is busy
excavating a hollow in a palm tree at the Highpoint shopping centre in
Maribyrnong (8 km NW of the city). I had a complaint about them this
morning. Apparently they spend time in the gums along the river nearby.

I have also seen Long-billed Corellas near Bulla (25 km NW of the city), in
a flock of some 200 birds, about half of which were Little Corellas. Both
species are on the move, expanding their ranges. Reports of these species
should be forwarded to the Atlas of Victorian Wildlife, so that the
expansion in their ranges can be monitored.

The new Bird Atlas scheme about to be launched by Birds Australia is
another avenue whereby changes in bird distribution can be recorded.
Anybody interested in participating in this scheme should contact Birds
Australia on email:

Cheers

Ian
