I notice that the Barking Owl [Ninox connivens] has been recommended for
listing under the NSW Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995.
The species is also going through the final stages of being lisetd under
the Victorian Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988 and should be on schedule
2 of this Act by the end of 1998. Further information about the NSW
Scientific Committee's final determination on the Barking Owl can be found

Note that the species is not listed under the Commonwealth Endangered
Species Protection Act 1992.
For those who haven't heard the calls of a Barking Owl, the following
description from Simpson and Day (1984) may be of interest. "explosive,
dog-like, double-bark; wavering human-like scream; grating trill; various
growls".
I have heard the dog-like call in the northern Victorian plains and at
first I was convinced a small dog was nearby, have any others recent
experience of these amazing calls?
