Tony Russell records the presence of the rare Powerful Owl (Ninox strenua) in Victoria's East Gippsland region. In Victoria there are thought to be fewer than 500 breeding pairs of this owl and any sightings of the species are of importance. Powerful Owls are apparently exitinct in South Australia and are vulnerable to extinction in Australia. I encourage list members and others to forward sightings of birds (rare or otherwise) to the Atlas of Victorian Wildlife (tel. 039 450 8600). All observations are potentially of value to the management of our avifauna.
