David, My impression is that immature brown goshawks in the suburbs about this time of year are right on cue. They are new birds spreading out to look for territory and liable to get into and/or create trouble. My sister has had one in her chook run in Mt. Waverley, and I have had sightings in Chadstone. I also think I saw a mature sparrowhawk last spring, but it was too fast to be sure. On size - very small - it could have been a male sparrowhawk.
