You probably will regret it, Julian. But it's certainly an issue worth giving another run! Believing that the two major organisations (Birds Oz & BOCA) serve somewhat different interests and needs, but nonetheless supporting the desirability of a single birds/birding organisation in Australia (for the reasons you have given, and others), my preference would be for an amalgamation in which the current Birds Oz structure took the primary responsibility for the more "scientific" aspects of birds and birding in Australia, while the current BOCA structure(s) continued to serve the more social and shared birding needs of birders - with a unified structure for conservation, fund-raising, etc. In my lifetime...???
