I had just "unsubscribed" temporarily from birding-aus and sabirdnet
when your above post arrived.
I thought you and the other netters may be interested in the
following extracts from " Handbook for the Ceylon Traveller " (1983)
pages 257/258:
" There are two 18-hole golf courses, the Royal Colombo Golf Club
........ and the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club, 6190 feet above sea level.
(The latter) has been recognised as one of the best 18-hole courses
in the world with fir trees lining the fairways and a gurgling trout
stream running through it. ...........
(The former) is a course where the unexpected could always happen,
like a crow snatching the white ball. This could well be the reason
for the motto of the Club ' as the crow flies ' with the figurehead
of a crow with a golf ball in his beak. "
