WANTED: NATURALIST TO JOIN BIRDING TRIP TO SULAWESI & HALMAHERA,
EASTERN INDONESIA, MID-1998.
We are planning a birding and natural history holiday to Sulawesi and
Halmahera in Eastern Indonesia, for one month around June 1998. We are
looking for **one** other person to accompany us, to enjoy the holiday
and to help split costs four ways.
Between the three of us we have a reasonable level of familiarity with
the birds and mammals of Indo-Malaya, from Java and Malaysia in the
West, through Bali and Lombok, to Irian Jaya in the East. We are now
keen to expand our knowledge and experience into Wallacea - that area
where the Oriental and Australasian bioregions overlap.
Our idea of an ideal travelling companion is someone who fits this
description (or most of it):
Financially secure enough & available to travel for a month in
mid-1998 (total amount of flights & ground costs should not be
more than about $A2,000 per person).
Is fit and healthy, and somewhere about our age (somewhere between
20 and 40 would be ideal).
A very well developed sense of humour.
Very good field naturalist skills.
Some familiarity with the birds of the Indonesian region, and
travelling in that area.
Is also interested in animals other than birds (particularly
mammals).
Is keen to see as much of the islands+ fauna as possible, but is
**NOT** a hardcore twitcher.
Is prepared to travel backpacker-style (ie. on a relatively
modest budget).
Some proficiency in Bahasa Indonesia, or another local language.
Sulawesi and Halmahera are home to some very spectacular and interesting
birds and mammals, including many endemics and near-endemics. Some
examples include Wallace's Standardwing, Paradise-crow, Maleo,
Isabelline Waterhen, Lilac Kingfisher, Purple Roller, Goliath Coucal,
Sulawesi Owl, Moluccan Owlet-nightjar, Moluccan Goshawk, Ivory-breasted
Pitta, Cerulean Cuckoo-shrike, Babyrusa, Anoa, Spectral Tarsier, Black
Macaque and Bear Cuscus.
