This sounds like some sort of sick joke - it makes you keep waiting for
the punchline. There isn't one.

There was a story on the front page of The Age today (Thurs Feb 13)
saying that BHP were very keen to build a 30m high gas rig off the coast
near the 12 Apostles. It would be visible from the cliffs overlooking the
12 Apostles. The rig would be 12Km from the nearest coastline, and 14Km
from the Apostles themselves. A BHP spokesman said that gas from the rig
would be fed through underwater pipelines to a gas plant about four Km
inland from the Great Ocean Road.

The Age reports that 'sources' in Canberra said that BHP was telling
federal parliamentarians that the company had surveyed the residents of
Port Campbell (near to the proposed site), and found that they were in
favour of the aove-sea structure (BHP has the option of building an
underwater extraction facility, but this is a bit too costly for them).

This news comes hot on the heels of the Gippsland forest debacle (see
next message) - wake up, Victorians! We've got to stop this madness.
