     Regarding the Songlarks - birds will often attack road kills of their 
     own species.  I have seen it happen several times.  I have actually 
     seen an Indian Myna hit a car, followed immediately by several other 
     mynas come from no where and dive bomb, peck and call frantically at 
     the still (slightly) alive myna.
     
     It is also a well known phenomenon with domestic chickens  - when an 
     injured bird will be pecked to death by the rest of the flock.
     
     So I would say that your Songlark was a fresh road kill.
     
     But why they do it is beyond me!
