There used to be quite a few Corellas in cages in Blackbutt Reserve in
Newcastle. Some animal liberationists (note the politically correct lower
case here) broke open the wire and let them free. From maybe a dozen or so
birds we now have a flock (in Winter, anyway) of about three hundred birds.
They are known to breed in Blackbutt Reserve as well as elsewhere in the
region and can be seen near sunset flying back to Blackbutt to roost. They
appear to be spreading and can be found regularly in the Morisset area. I
have even seen some at Monkerai, which is up in the Northern parts of the
Hunter Valley area between Dungog and Gloucester. Both species occur but
Little Corellas are in the majority. They seem to be well established and I
for one 'tick' them regularly.
