To me, it is simply a matter of weighing the benefits of a board which may have the exact hardware you need but may be less familiar, versus one that is familiar but does not have what you need.

I have used the TS-7553 when I needed the XBee socket, and the Raspberry Pi when I did not.
I also used the Beaglebone Black when the Raspberry Pi did not have enough IOs or when I was concerned that all the software resided on an SD card and I wanted the safety of onboard flash.

One board is not better than the other in abstract, even though the amount of available software and support is very important no matter what you do, you also need to look at the application. If your application is not demanding and any board will do, use the least expensive that is available.

The TS-x boards were once my preferred choice for anything I did which
needed Unix in a small form factor.

With RaspberryPi (and MangoPi, GuavaPi) and BeagleBoard available, I
find my loyalty to TS-x wavering at times.

What do all of you do in similar situations specially in no-legacy
projects where starting from scratch and choosing a board is a option ?
