I wanted to make the above post complete, but alas I forgot a few items!

The /dev/pts don't get generated via the boot sequence, which prevents you from telneting or sshing in.  Per this post, http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/ts-7000/message/17939, I moved this later in the boot sequence:

As user root on the ts-7260:

    cd /etc/rcS.d
    mv S04mountdevsubfs.sh S14mountdevsubfs.sh

Also, if you try to run an executable file that ran under the 2.4 kernel in bash, you may get a "file not found" error.  This is a confusing error message.  It doesn't mean that the executable wasn't found, but that one of the dynamically linked libraries required by the executable wasn't found!  You can make this work by copying the library (/lib) from a 2.4 system to your lenny system naming is something like /lib-2.4.  The the following will use these libraries:

    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/lib-2.4 <program and parameters>
