Larry, Juan, thanks... I assumed I needed to reboot for changes to take place.
Defintely I though the same but needed to make sure that I cannot do this from the command line ( from the app or by calling the command ) and just editing the file.

I do exactly as you suggest. I have a script that edits and changes /etc/network/interfaces and is accessed from a php web page. It works fine, although you have to reboot for the change to take effect.
