[ts-7000] setting IP ts7200

I have a newby one:.

I need to set the ip address from my app but not sure the best way to do so. 
I'm running debian but once the app is finished ( i'm developing on the host ) 
the system will be running my application on 2.4.26.
what are the available options?
I mean I can edit /etc/sysconfig/ifcfg-eth0 from my app, but not sure if it is 
posssible to change the ip from bash thru a call to the system.
let's say :

system (do something to change the ip);

will appreciate your help.
