I just got a Hakko 742 desoldering machine, and I use an older Pace iron
with great results. I got my first Hakko a few years back. I was using a Pace
at work one Thurs afternoon, and getting real sick of it. I dropped it, went
online, and ordered a 742 with overnight delivery. In the morning, I told my
boss I was fed up with the Pace, and if they wanted the Hakko, they could pay
me for it. If they didn't, I told him I was taking it home. Well, they wanted
it, and they paid.

I came up with a need recently, and getting another Hakko was a no-brainer.
I like the Hakko, although I'll admit I haven't sampled the entire market.
Metcal is good, too, but the tips and consummables are a bit pricey. The key
is to maintain the thing. Keep the tips clean, remember to clean out the
solder now and then, and turn it off when not in use. Keep extra tips on hand.
When the tip starts to wear and corrode, be real careful or replace it, since
a rough tip will tear up a board. It will damage pads and such. Other than
that, it's in the technique.

   Best of luck to you.
