Looks like I fell into the same trap my students do - following instructions blindly without actual thought.  'dd' did, as you say, exactly what I told it to do.  'cp' put it just where I wanted it.

yes, you used dd

dd copies byte-for-byte to /dev/sdb1, so it will screw over your file
system, just as you asked it to.

Why didn't you use "cp"?
