Agreed this will do it. But if your going that far why not simply use the Internet? You probably have the connections at both ends anyway. Security can be provided by a virtual private network. (VPN) some routers directly support VPN s

By all means 802.11 can do 1-2km, you can go further then that too :)
No you don't need expensive stuff, you can do it with a consumer router
(read, $30-40), a couple Pringles cans and some coax to feed it with.

There's loads of antennas on eBay for really cheap like this

<http://cgi.ebay.ca/2-4-GHz-16-dBi-Wifi-Yagi-Antenna-RP-SMA-5-meter-cable-/190502707460?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c5ad8a104>

Giving your system some gain on the antennas is how you get the distance :)

Check out some of the third party FW providers too like OpenWRT, DD-WRT,
ect and see if it will run on a router you have/can get cheap. With
third party FW a lot of the time you can turn the power up on the
transmittier.

If you're wondering if you can make it with 802.11 there is no way
you'll make it with Bluetooth (100M) or Zigbee (70M) not to mention
their quite slow.
