I think the kernel is actually on the 2nd partition. 3rd partition is 
the initrd, and the 4th partition is the root file system.

Also, I ran into some problems when changing my kernel name from the 
original name. I'm not sure why, but I had to keep the name the same 
(e.g. 2.6.29-ts) in order to get the kernel and user space to work together.
