I hope there is good reason to switch from a working PIC18 or Aruduino type
microcontroller to a full-blown linux kernel on ARM ... IMHO, the extra
complexity is only worth it if you need the higher level features. (Data
logging? Web interface? Email from your solenoids!)

cygwin on the xp machine, but I haven't been able to mount a directory for file
transfer or comm over the ethernet port.

Sorry, I can't help with cygwin or eclipse. Personally I use linux for ARM
development, cross compiling on my desktop machines for the ARM target. TS has
several good "getting started with linux" type guides on their website.
