Self-replying. I tried cross-compiling the 2.6 wifibox source to make
modules for the 2.6. wifibox binaries. It wouldn't load the modules!
Grrrr....

After much frobbing, I finally discovered /proc/config.gz. It's a copy
of the config file that the kernel was compiled with. If you take that,
uncompress it, and place it in your kernel source directory as
".config", then the kernel you compile will have the exact same
configuration as the one you're running, and modules will load.

So ... turns out that what I really needed was the "option" module.
Enabled that in the .config, copied the module onto the board, ran
usb_modeswitch to get the board to switch out of cdrom mode, and ...

It's working! Not with wvdial, which has a bug in the arm architecture,
but with vanilla pppd. Takes a bit of configuration, but it works a
champ.

Feel free to ask me for the details if you need to hook up a CDMA USB
cell data modem to your TS-7400.
