I've never tried to do what you're doing, but the fact that the error message indicates that it thinks it's trying to connect to a "local" MySQL server seems significant. It could be that it's not getting your configuration parameters, so it's assuming it should connect to a local server or there could be some mis-configuration of the user on the MySQL server side that's causing it to fail.
