It is probably best to use the chat program which can send commands to modems 
and report on the responses.  It is used by pppd to establish a link and does 
work with GSM modems and the TS-GSM1 in particular.

Look for tutorials on chat and ppp although the connection establishment is not 
what you are trying to do.
