It's ideal primarily because it accepts a wide range of voltages, and
thus does not require a separate power supply, or for the power to be
regulated from the battery. I am using the TS-7260 with a solar
powered autonomous boat. The power supply is a real help, although if
you are running several devices off the USB you may brown out.

The TS-7260 has a very limited number of AD channels, so using it for
voltage is probably a bad move. The approach I have used with success
is the Phidget Interface, which connects via USB and provides 8 AD
channels, 8 Digital Out, and 8 Digital In. A major advantage of using
Phidgets is that they have a library and API for virtually every
language, and thus are potentially "cross platform" in terms of being
able to swap out the SBC without too much hassle. The libraries make
interfacing easy, and they have ready to go sensors for things like
voltage, current, temperature and many more. For non-electrical
engineers who are mainly prototyping this solution is pretty good.

Thats not to say that directly connecting to the TS-7260's IO lines
isn't perfectly acceptable.

Also, I have actually used the Phidgets on the TS-7260, so I know it
works. I can help you get some precompiled binaries for the drivers if
you wish, as I doubt you will be able to compile them on the stock
TS-LINUX distro. I would strongly suggest moving to booting your
TS-7260 off USB into Debian in order to get all the goodies :)
