The C code will almost keep the same. Just make the maths so you consider the 
reduction.
I think a Voltage Divider (two resistors) is the easiest and best option, the 
only thing about that is, use high value resistors so you don't consume too 
much power, or you could try using an Operational Amplifier.
There are a lot of circuits on the net to help you reducing 12 --> 3.3 V.
And, if you have any doubt about connecting it, try to check with some 
electronic, cuz you can really damage the ADC. Don't be afraid, just be careful.
