RTC on ts7400 is only DIL part soldered over memory chip.
/sbin/hwclock should probably check if RTC is present and act accordingly.

If you are not planing to use RTC on some boards, then just
 - disable init scripts
 - or set HWCLOCKACCESS=no in /etc/default/rcS
 - or maybe replace /sbin/hwclock with /bin/false or script that will print warning and do nothing (this will prevent problems when some other script tries to use hwclock)

If you want to use RTC if available, you will have to find some way to patch hwclock to bail out if RTC is not found.
on linux 2.4 and board with RTC:
cat /proc/driver/rtc
rtc_time        : 00:22:00
rtc_date        : 2010-02-04
rtc_epoch       : 1900
alarm           : **:**:**
DST_enable      : no
BCD             : yes
24hr            : yes
square_wave     : no
alarm_IRQ       : no
update_IRQ      : no
periodic_IRQ    : no
periodic_freq   : 0
batt_status     : okay

so maybe checking for bogus values (rtc_time : 63:255:255 rtc_date : 2255-255-255 in your case) could be a simple workaround.

Also this is probably bug in /sbin/hwclock, so maybe TS could help. It should be trivial to fix.

Moving /etc/init.d/hwclock.sh and /etc/init.d/hwclockfirst.sh allows me to boot! Thank you.

But what exactly did I do? I don't believe I'm using a TS-7400 with an RTC module, but I don't know for sure. How do I check? Should I do anything after I am able to boot into 2.6.29 to "fix" the hwclock?
