I had the same thing.
Funny thing was that if I moved closer to the Wifi access point the
problem went away. Seems that if the Wifi access point is out of range
it would read the SSID - aka you could get a list of networks, but if
you try to connect it would either fail to connect or actually hand
the entire machine.
Moving it a few feet from the access point solved it; but obviously
this is far from ideal
