This problem is probably caused by badly mounted /dev/pty. It is mounted in initrd and than shoud be moved to root partition, but it doesnt work with TS scripts. Unmounting /dev/pty and mounting it again should help.
To fix it permanently, it is neccesary to modify debian and/or TS init scripts. I'll try to find my configuration and post it..

processes there are no getty processes. I'm pretty sure etch allowed
