We have had the very same experience. We deploy a large number
of TS7260 and Iridium modems for the National Science Foundation
in the Arctic (both land and sea based systems). For over a year
we struggled with the same type of lock up that you are describing.
What happens is that, when using hardware flow control, the modem
raises CTS to stop the transmission and never lowers it again.
Toggling DTR will do a soft reset and let you get control again.
The strange thing is that using a USB to serial adapter works, but
none of the onboard serial ports (the AMBA based ttyAM*, the FPGA
COM3 nor PC-104 add ons like the TS-SER1 board) worked. All of 
this pointed to a slight timing variation, even though the signals 
look spot on when looking at them on a scope.

The good news is that there is a simple solution - just use two stop
bits. That puts in just a little bit of room between the characters
and seems to solve the lock up problem. Specifically, we run our
systems at 19200 N82.

We are using both modem-to-modem dialup (PPP) as well as RUDICS and
